June 2011 VBS Trip

I was honored to travel to Haiti in June with students from Calvary Murrieta Christian School.  Our main project was to go to the remote village schools and host kid’s clubs for the Haitian students.  Each day the team was met with exuberant, beautiful Haitian children who were eager to hear our students share about Jesus.  Our VBS theme was “Jesus The Good Shepherd” (John 10:14).  The students performed a skit (“sheep” included!), games, craft, singing, and a Bible lesson.

One of the trip highlights was when we visited a nearby orphanage called “Missionaries of Charity”.  What an eye-opener and emotional experience!  As soon as we walked through the door of the children’s home, each of us immediately had a child run into our arms.  These desperate children didn’t just want to be touched, they wanted to be held in our arms with their little legs and arms wrapped around tight, desperately holding on!  We spent several hours playing with the children, distributing stuffed animals and toys, loving on them, and fighting back tears.

I have made several visits back to this orphanage since our first visit, and it never gets easier.  You hear the life-stories of these precious children, details of their family and abandonment, illness, and malnutrition.  One of the sisters who help run the orphanage asked me a startling questions, “where have you been?”  I explained to her that I had no idea this orphanage existed and we were going to commit to visit as often as possible.  As we were leaving, our interpretor asked if we had gone downstairs to visit the elderly!  We had been so focused on entertaining the children, we had no idea there were “older” people living there, abandoned, as well.  It was an emotional, heart-wrenching experience that none of us will ever forget.  I have etched in my memory those innocent baby faces, with a broken smile, and all I can do it pray for them.

Our team consisted of Calvary Murrieta High School students and parents.  We held kids clubs in four of the HEF schools and also hosted two on the compound. We were prepared to bless the children of Haiti by teaching them about Jesus, but they taught and blessed us far more then we ever expected.  During our trip, a summer storm hit Hinche, so there were a few bumps and puddles in the road to get to the churches; but God was faithful and we made it to all four villages as planned!  God spoke to our whole team during the trip and we developed some great relationships with the youth in Hinche.  We had an amazing trip and can’t wait for our next school trip to Hinche!
